Such Sadness

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

My favorite novelist has passed on to the next life. It is with deep sadness that I announce Minnesota author, John Hassler died on March 20.

Known as “Mr. Hustle-Brain” to his English students (my mother was one of them), this delightful author captured the gentle essence of life in Minnesota in a most compelling way. My mother remembers his teaching style as quiet and unassuming, yet he held the class in rapt attention, sitting “in the palm of his hand.”

While his stories took their time to unfold, he could weave a tale like no other. Rumor has it that he completed his next novel just a few days prior to his death. I hope it’s true.

He will be sorely missed.

Something Better

Monday, March 24th, 2008

I used to wonder how people, famous writers, could churn out so many words, publish so many stories… their creative output was tremendous. “Stop watching TV,” I’d hear. But try as I might, I couldn’t seem to turn off that little tube and fire up the computer.

Sure, I’d make it a week of television-free living, maybe two, but then the lure of sweeps inevitably plunked me back into a couch potato, mindlessly watching the same drivel over and over.

But then one day a shift began. As I studied metaphysics, as I began to delve into things spiritual, as I became fascinated with mindset, the law of attraction, and other faiths, my television time naturally decreased as my reading/listening time increased. The more I read, the more I wanted to understand. The more I wanted to understand, the less time I had for the inane antics of imaginary characters in the latest sit-com.

In the best possible sense, my vacuous television time was replaced with something better… something I wanted more than finding out the latest outcome on the latest cliff-hanger. And as a result, my writing output skyrocketed. And with more writing output, I finished more assignments. As I finished assignments, my income reflected that activity.

It’s all connected, it follows a natural path.

Writing is, and should always be your greatest joy. If it isn’t, you really ought to reevaluate your ultimate goal in life.

The old saying is truly correct: Follow your bliss.

It really is that simple.

Welcome Amazon!

How cool. This blog is now a “Plog” as well. Go figure.

I want to thank Amazon for opening up their site to my blog. That’s a generous and wonderful thing to do. I’m looking forward to working together.

It’s March 21 and it looks like Christmas outside. We received around nine inches of snow last night and it’s still going strong. It’s a perfect day to write like mad.

So, that being said, I’ve got some great plans for the rest of ‘08. I truly value everyone who reads what I have to say and welcome your comments.

More later because I’m off to spend some time with PeeWee… my “writing” computer!

The Economy

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

A fellow freelancer forwarded an e-mail to me. They recently hosted a teleseminar and mentioned that the economy is affecting the profession. One of the callers disagreed, writing:

“I attended a recent teleseminar and was really disappointed that politics was brought into it. I have to deal with political challenges everywhere… I do not want to hear it in a writing seminar, especially when words like “recession” are used inaccurately to promote the viewpoint of one of the presenters.”

Now, I’m not one to open a political can of worms, but I do believe that the current state of the economy does affect the freelance landscape. To ignore what’s going on in the political scene, to pretend the economy isn’t tightening, to be unaware of the plight of the average American would be career suicide.

Now, I’m not advocating shouting your political views from the mountaintops, but you are very wise when you take note of the latest economic news, combine it with real world experience, and draw your conclusions… as well as adjust your game plan… from there.

To think that a writing career is all roses, happy thoughts, and positive intentions is a bit dangerous when you don’t take into account the real world your readership is currently living in.

Truth be told, and you can find a ton of freelancers who agree with me on this, many publishers are tightening their guidelines and accepting fewer titles. Marketing managers are squeezing every cent out of every mailing. In the copywriting world, many mailers are eliminating royalties. Big time copywriting gurus are supplementing their income by selling copywriting “how to” products to aspiring copywriters who are clueless to the reason behind this sudden generosity to “share the craft.” Readerships decline, belts tighten, and it’s getting a bit tougher to earn a living as a freelancer.

The silver lining?

Those who don’t understand how to effectively communicate will drop the profession. Publishing houses that don’t carefully evaluate manuscripts will perish. Authors who go the vanity publishing route will flush their cash.

But the savvy freelancer who develops even rudimentary marketing skills, the freelancer who remains aware, yet positive, the freelancer who takes time to cultivate a career… these writers will do just fine, in my humble opinion.

So yeah. Be aware of the current economic situation, but don’t drown in the negativity of it. If you’re not aware, you will languish in this profession. It’s that simple.

I’m Tired Today

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

It’s been a huge day. I updated FilbertPublishing.com as well as 3Chix.com. What a lotta work!

Filbert’s getting too big again so I figure I’ll take down some back issues and place the articles in the “articles” section. I know. I should be able to update the site one page at a time, but XSite Pro doesn’t allow that. It carefully saves all 174 pages (very slowly I must add) and updates each one as well.

Drives me nuts sometimes.

However, I do appreciate the easy updating, plug and play. Guess that’s the price you pay for ease of use, eh?

I do recommend XSite. Just be aware that as your site grows, it will stagger under the weight of too many pages.

Hey, my dear son is uploading a cool Jake and Rudie video to YouTube. I’ll post it when he gets ‘er up.

How exciting…

Talk later,

Beth
